Keeping the Girls Safe

During all meetings, ensure that Standard 13 is being met.  Refer to SW p.69.

• Leadership requirements

• Girl Adult Ratio requirements

Each age level has requirements for girl– adult ratio for different activities.  It is important to reference Standard 13, page 69 in order to ensure that your troop is maintaining proper ratios for all activities.

This means that Safety-Wise needs to be consulted for activities that you are planning with the troop.  To help you get started, refer to the checklists below for safety guidelines at the meeting place.  References to Safety-Wise will be listed as SW.

Anytime there is a potential for injury at a meeting or during an activity, there should be a first-aider present.  A Girl Scout first-aider is an adult who has taken Girl Scout council-approved first-aid and CPR training and holds a current certificate. See SW 37 for organizations who provide approved training.

As the leader of a Girl Scout troop/group, you are taking responsibility for the girls safety.  To help you carry out this responsibility, Safety-Wise has been created by the Girl Scouts of the USA.  It provides Program Standards and safety guidelines for common Girl Scout activities and basic leadership resources for leaders.  At this point in your journey as a leader, you should have received a troop copy of Safety-Wise.   Safety-Wise is used in conjunction with the leader’s guide for the age level of the troop/group.

Text Box: Daisy Girl Scout travel activities include local field trips (up to a day long) and overnight camping trips with family members
